01
Warm

Warm best man speech

“Good evening, everyone. I’m Daniel’s best man, and I’ve been lucky enough to call him a friend for many years. I could use this moment to reveal several stories that would permanently change your opinion of him, but I’ve decided friendship should survive the wedding. Daniel, your friendship has meant a great deal to me. Alex, it is genuinely lovely to celebrate you both today. I hope the years ahead bring you plenty of laughter, good company and reasons to keep choosing each other. Please raise a glass to Daniel and Alex.”
02
Funny

Funny but kind best man speech

“When Tom asked me to be best man, I assumed it was because he respected my judgement and public-speaking ability. Apparently everyone else had already said no. Joking aside, Tom, it means a lot to stand here for you. Sophie, I’m very happy to welcome you into this slightly chaotic group. The best jokes tonight are the ones Tom can laugh at too, so I’ll leave the truly dangerous material safely unpublished. Please raise a glass to Tom and Sophie: may married life give you plenty to laugh about and very few reasons to call me for advice.”
03
Short

Short best man speech

“I promised I’d keep this short, which is useful because nobody came to a wedding hoping the best man would discover a second career in public speaking. James, your friendship means a lot to me, and I’m proud to be here beside you today. Emma, it is a pleasure to celebrate you too. I hope married life brings you both plenty of laughter, patience and good days together. Please raise a glass to James and Emma. Cheers.”
04
Heartfelt

Heartfelt best man speech

“I’ve known Marcus long enough to have seen him through ordinary days, difficult days and a lot of very forgettable haircuts. The thing I value most is simpler than any story I could tell: his friendship has been a constant in my life. Priya, seeing the two of you celebrate today gives all of us another reason to be happy for him. I won’t offer marriage advice. I’ll simply wish you both a life with kindness, humour and people around you who are always pleased to see you. To Marcus and Priya.”
05
Best friend

Best man speech for your best friend

“Ben and I met when we were teenagers, which means we’ve had enough time to collect stories that should probably remain private. What matters today is that he has been one of the most important friends in my life. Hannah, thank you for accepting that some of us come as part of the long-term package. Ben, I’m very glad to be standing here as your best man. Hannah and Ben, I hope you keep finding reasons to laugh together and that the years ahead are full of moments worth celebrating. To both of you.”
06
Brother

Best man speech for your brother

“For anyone I haven’t met, I’m Luke’s brother and, today, his best man. Being related means I have a lifetime of material available, but I’ve been told this is a wedding rather than a disciplinary hearing. Luke, it means a lot to stand beside you today. Maya, I’m pleased to welcome you and to celebrate the two of you together. I hope your marriage gives you plenty of laughter, good conversations and a home that feels completely your own. Please raise a glass to Luke and Maya.”
07
University

University friend best man speech

“Chris and I met at university, where neither of us was especially focused on building the kind of friendships that would eventually involve formalwear and microphones. Somehow, here we are. Chris, I’m grateful that what started as a university friendship lasted well beyond it. Sam, it has been a pleasure getting to know you too. I’ll keep the old stories brief and the toast sincere: may the two of you have a marriage full of good humour, steady support and many reasons to gather everyone together again. To Chris and Sam.”
08
Childhood friend

Childhood friend best man speech

“I’ve known Oliver since we were children, which gives me a slightly unfair advantage tonight. I remember versions of him that most of this room will never meet, and he should be extremely grateful for that. Oliver, growing up alongside you has given me a friendship I value enormously. Taylor, I’m very happy to be celebrating the two of you today. I hope the years ahead bring you a lot of laughter, a lot of ordinary good days and plenty of people around you who care about you. Please raise a glass to Oliver and Taylor.”
09
Simple

Simple best man speech with no big anecdote

“I don’t have one dramatic story that explains who Ethan is, and I don’t think I need one. Good friendships are usually built from smaller things: conversations, shared plans, ordinary days and knowing someone will answer when you call. Ethan, your friendship means a great deal to me. Grace, it is a pleasure to welcome you and to celebrate the two of you today. I hope married life brings you both happiness, laughter and a lot of days that feel quietly good. To Ethan and Grace.”
10
Story-led

One-story best man speech

“A few years ago, Noah and I booked a weekend away and discovered, much too late, that he had reserved the right town in the wrong country. That is the only travel story I’m going to tell tonight. Noah, your friendship has survived worse planning than that, and it means a great deal to me. Amelia, I’m very happy to celebrate you too. Today is about the two of you, not old mistakes, so I’ll end with something simple: may your marriage bring you many good days and many reasons to laugh together. To Noah and Amelia.”
11
Elegant

Elegant best man speech

“There is a temptation, as best man, to think the speech needs to be a performance. It doesn’t. For me, the important thing is to say clearly that David’s friendship has mattered a great deal over the years, and that it is a privilege to celebrate this day with him and Jordan. David and Jordan, I hope the life you build together contains generosity, laughter and plenty of room for the people who care about you. Thank you for letting us share this occasion with you. Please raise a glass to the newlyweds.”
12
Modern

Modern best man speech

“I’ll skip the traditional list of embarrassing stories and keep the useful parts. Ryan, you’re one of the people I trust most, and being your best man means a lot to me. Morgan, I’m very glad to be celebrating you as part of this day too. The two of you don’t need advice from me, and nobody else in this room needs a ten-minute speech. So I’ll keep it simple: I hope your marriage is full of laughter, good conversations and the freedom to make it completely your own. To Ryan and Morgan.”
13
Newer connection

Best man speech when you do not know the partner well

“I’ve known Adam for many years, but I haven’t had the same amount of time to get to know Jamie. So I won’t pretend otherwise. What I can say is that I’m genuinely pleased to be here celebrating both of you and to have the chance to welcome Jamie warmly. Adam, your friendship means a lot to me. Jamie, I look forward to more occasions when all of us can spend time together. For today, the important thing is simple: congratulations to you both, and may the years ahead bring you plenty of happiness.”
14
Low-key

Low-key best man speech

“Public speaking is not my natural habitat, so Alex has already received his first wedding gift from me: brevity. Alex, I’m very glad you asked me to stand here with you. Casey, it is a pleasure to celebrate you too. I could make this more complicated, but the message is straightforward. I care a great deal about my friendship with Alex, and I wish both of you a marriage with laughter, patience and many good days ahead. Please raise your glasses to Alex and Casey.”
15
Toast

Best man toast ending

“I’ll finish with the part that matters most. Daniel, thank you for your friendship and for trusting me with the microphone today. Avery, congratulations and welcome. I hope the two of you have a marriage full of laughter, kindness and enough adventures to keep future speeches interesting. Everyone, please raise a glass to Daniel and Avery: may the years ahead be happy, generous and entirely your own. Cheers.”

Keep it simple

A best man speech template that actually works

You do not need a complicated formula. Five clear parts are enough for most best man speeches.

01

Introduce yourself

One sentence is enough: who you are and how you know the person you are best man for.

“For anyone I haven’t met, I’m James’s best man and we’ve been friends since university.”

02

Say what the friendship means

Give the room one genuine reason this person matters to you. Specific beats dramatic.

“James’s friendship has meant a great deal to me over the years.”

03

Tell one story

Pick a story that is easy to understand, reasonably short and safe to tell in front of the whole room.

“On a trip to Scotland, James insisted he knew the route and led us back to the same pub twice.”

04

Bring in the partner and couple

Do not leave the speech stuck in the past. Welcome or acknowledge the partner and move the focus to the couple.

“Emma, I want you to know how warmly welcomed you are by all of us.”

05

Finish with a clear toast

Stop before the speech starts repeating itself. Ask the room to raise a glass and give the couple one concise wish.

“Please raise a glass to James and Emma. May the years ahead bring you plenty of happiness and laughter.”

Start confidently

Best man speech opening lines

“For anyone I haven’t met, I’m James’s best man — a role I accepted before checking whether it involved public speaking.”

“James and I have been friends for years, which gives me a lot of material and, fortunately for him, very limited time.”

“I promised James I would keep this short, kind and legally defensible.”

“When James asked me to be best man, I was honoured. When he mentioned the speech, the feeling became slightly more complicated.”

“I’ve known James long enough to know which stories are funny and which ones should remain permanently off the record.”

“Good evening, everyone. I’m James’s best man, and my job is to say a few words without making him reconsider the appointment.”

End cleanly

How to end a best man speech

“Please raise a glass to James and Emma: may the years ahead bring you plenty of happiness and plenty of reasons to laugh together.”

“To the newlyweds — may married life be kind, funny and completely your own.”

“Here’s to James and Emma, and to many good years ahead. Cheers.”

“Please join me in wishing them a lifetime of good company, shared laughter and days worth celebrating.”

“To James and Emma: congratulations, and may this be one of many happy occasions we get to celebrate with you.”

“Raise your glasses to the couple — and, most importantly, enjoy the rest of the wedding.”

Practical writing guide

How to write a best man speech

Write for the whole room

A story that is hilarious to six old friends may mean nothing to everyone else. Give enough context for parents, colleagues and newer friends to follow it.

Use one strong story

One clear anecdote usually lands better than five rushed ones. Tell it, make the joke, then move on instead of turning it into a biography.

Be funny without making it a roast

The goal is laughter with the couple, not at their expense. Cut anything humiliating, private or likely to make one side of the room uncomfortable.

Include the partner

Even if most of your history is with one person, the speech is happening at their wedding. Acknowledge the partner and finish with the couple.

Practise aloud

A speech that looks short on a screen can feel long at a microphone. Reading it aloud shows you where sentences drag and where a pause will help.

Sound like yourself

Do not force grand language because it is a wedding. The best version usually sounds like your normal voice with slightly better structure.

Keep the room with you

How long should a best man speech be?

There is no single compulsory length. Around 2–4 minutes works well at many weddings, but a shorter speech is better than stretching thin material.

≈ 1 minute

Short and safe

About 125–150 words. Good if there are many speakers or you prefer one clear message and a toast.

≈ 2 minutes

A strong default

About 250–300 words. Enough for an introduction, one story, a message to the couple and a toast.

≈ 3 minutes

More room for detail

About 375–425 words. Useful when you genuinely have more context or a story worth developing.

What not to say in a best man speech

If you are unsure whether a story belongs in the speech, imagine saying it while standing next to both newlyweds and their families.

Ex-partner stories or comparisons
Private sexual or relationship details
Humiliation disguised as a joke
Jokes about appearance, fertility or money
Family conflict or genuinely sensitive history
Long inside jokes nobody else understands
Anything the partner is hearing for the first time
A ten-minute collection of unrelated stories

Common questions

Best man speech FAQ

How do I start a best man speech?

Start by introducing yourself and your connection to the person you are best man for. One light line can relax the room, but you do not need a joke. Then move quickly into the friendship, a real story or the reason the relationship matters to you.

How long should a best man speech be?

Around 2 to 4 minutes works well for most weddings. On this page, the generator offers roughly 1-minute, 2-minute and 3-minute versions so you can choose a length that matches the schedule and how much real material you have.

What should a best man say in his speech?

A strong best man speech usually introduces the speaker, says something genuine about the friendship, includes one relevant story, acknowledges the partner and couple, and ends with a clear toast.

Does a best man speech have to be funny?

No. A warm, natural speech is better than forced comedy. If you use humour, make the story or observation funny without humiliating anyone, exposing private information or turning the speech into a roast.

What should I avoid in a best man speech?

Avoid ex-partners, private sexual stories, humiliating details, jokes about appearance, money or family conflict, long inside jokes and stories that require too much explanation. Keep anything you would not comfortably say in front of the couple and their families out of the speech.

What if I do not know the partner very well?

Do not invent closeness. Be honest and warm. You can focus on your friendship with the person who asked you to be best man, welcome their partner, congratulate them both and keep the couple included without pretending you share a long history.

Can I read a best man speech from notes?

Yes. Notes are completely fine. A short printed copy or a few cue cards are safer than trying to memorise every word. Practise aloud enough that you can look up regularly rather than reading continuously.

What is the difference between a best man speech and a wedding toast?

The speech is the full set of remarks: introduction, story, message and conclusion. The toast is usually the final line asking guests to raise a glass to the couple.
