How to play the newlywed game

The format comes from the 1960s TV show. It works the same way at a reception, a bridal shower or a couples game night.

  1. 1. Pick 15 to 20 questions

Mix a few categories: start with classic questions, add funny ones in the middle and finish with something sweet.

  2. 2. Get one partner's answers first

Ask the groom (or the bride) to answer in advance, on paper or on video. At a party with several couples, send one partner from each couple out of the room.

  3. 3. Ask the other partner

The host reads each question to the other partner in front of the guests. They answer out loud or write on an answer card.

  4. 4. Reveal and score

Reveal the first answer, or play the video. Every match scores one point. Make the last question worth double to keep the suspense.

  5. 5. Crown the winners

With one couple, celebrate the final score. With several couples, the highest score wins a small prize, like a bottle of bubbly.

The newlywed game at a bridal shower

The bridal shower newlywed game is one of the most popular shower games. Before the party, ask the groom to answer 15 to 20 questions about the bride, ideally on video.

At the shower, the bride answers the same questions and the maid of honor reveals the groom's answers one at a time. The "How well do you know your husband?" and engagement questions above work especially well.

The newlywed game at the reception

At the wedding, play it after dinner, when guests are seated and facing the couple. Give the host a microphone and keep it to 15 minutes.

Prefer something quicker? The wedding shoe game uses only "who" questions, so the couple can answer both at once with a shoe.

Let every guest play

Turn your newlywed game questions into a quiz for all your guests

In the newlywed game, only the couple plays. With The Wedding Quiz, you write the same questions with multiple-choice answers and every guest plays from their phone with a QR code. Friends and family can suggest questions, and a leaderboard reveals who knows you best. Free to create and test, €39.99 once when you activate it.

Newlywed game FAQ

What is the newlywed game?

The newlywed game is a couples game based on the classic TV show. One partner answers questions about the other, and the other partner tries to predict those answers. Each match scores a point, and the couple who knows each other best wins. At a wedding or bridal shower, it's usually played by the bride and groom alone.

How do you play the newlywed game at a wedding?

Ask one partner to answer the questions in advance, or have them write their answers on cards on the day. The host then asks the other partner the same questions in front of the guests and reveals whether the answers match. Keep it to 15 to 20 questions so it lasts around 15 minutes.

How do you score the newlywed game?

Give one point for each matching answer. With several couples, add up the points after each round and crown the couple with the highest score. For a bigger finale, make the last question worth double points.

What is the difference between the newlywed game and the shoe game?

The newlywed game uses open questions, like "What is your partner's favorite food?", and partners predict each other's answers. The shoe game only uses "who" questions, and both partners answer at the same time by raising a shoe. The "who is more likely to" questions on this page work for both.

How do you play the newlywed game at a bridal shower?

Before the shower, ask the groom to answer 15 to 20 questions about the bride, on paper or on video. During the shower, the bride answers the same questions and guests reveal the groom's answers one by one. A common twist: the bride chews a piece of gum for each wrong answer.

Can several couples play the newlywed game?

Yes. At a party, two to four couples work well. Send one partner from each couple out of the room, ask the others the questions, then bring them back to guess. Swap roles for the second round.

Can every guest play instead of just the couple?

In the classic version only the couple plays. If you want every guest to join in, you can turn your newlywed game questions into a wedding quiz guests answer on their phones, with a leaderboard showing who knows the couple best.
