Warm

Warm maid of honor speech

“Good evening, everyone. I’m Emma’s maid of honor, and I’m very happy to be here celebrating Emma and Alex. Emma, your friendship has meant a great deal to me over the years. Alex, I’d like to welcome you warmly. I won’t try to sum up an entire friendship in a few minutes. I’ll simply say that I’m grateful to be standing beside Emma today, and I wish both of you a marriage filled with laughter, kindness and many good years together. Please raise a glass to Emma and Alex.”
02
Funny

Funny but kind maid of honor speech

“When Emma asked me to be maid of honor, I was thrilled. Then I remembered there was a speech involved, and my confidence became slightly more negotiable. Emma, your friendship means a lot to me. Alex, it is a pleasure to celebrate you too. I have enough stories to keep everyone here until breakfast, but friendship includes knowing when not to use them. So I’ll keep this kind, brief and legally safe. Please raise a glass to Emma and Alex: may married life give you plenty to laugh about together.”

“Grace, there are a lot of things I could say about our friendship, but the simplest one is probably the most important: having you in my life has meant more to me than I can fit into a speech. Jamie, I’m very happy to celebrate you too. Today belongs to both of you and to the marriage you have chosen. I hope the years ahead bring you good conversations, steady support and plenty of reasons to laugh together. Please raise a glass to Grace and Jamie.”

I hope married life gives both of you many good days, a lot of laughter and a home that feels completely your own. To Olivia and Casey.”

Sister

Maid of honor speech for your sister

I’ll leave the family archives closed and keep the message simple: I wish you both a happy marriage, plenty of laughter and many good years together. Please raise a glass to Lily and Taylor.”

A simple five-part structure

Maid of honor speech template

The role is flexible, so a clear structure helps. Five parts are enough for most maid of honor speeches.

01

Introduce yourself

Say who you are and how you know the bride. One clear sentence is enough.

“For anyone I haven’t met, I’m Emma’s maid of honor and we’ve been friends since university.”

02

Say what the relationship means

Use one real feeling or truth about the bride instead of a long list of generic compliments.

“Emma, your friendship has meant a great deal to me over the years.”

03

Share one story if useful

Choose a story that is kind, understandable to the whole room and short enough to keep the speech moving.

“At university, Emma once arrived for an exam a full day early and only realised when the room was empty.”

04

Bring in the partner and couple

Move from your history with the bride to the wedding you are actually celebrating.

“Alex, I’d like to welcome you warmly, and I’m very happy to celebrate you both today.”

05

Finish with a toast

Stop before the speech repeats itself. One clear wish and a raised glass are enough.

“Please raise a glass to Emma and Alex. May your marriage bring you happiness and many good years together.”

Start confidently

Maid of honor speech opening lines

“When Emma asked me to be maid of honor, I said yes immediately. The speech portion of the job became clear later.”

“Good evening, everyone. I’m Emma’s maid of honor, and I’ll try to keep this warm, brief and safe for all family members present.”

“I’ve known Emma long enough to know which stories are wedding stories and which ones are absolutely not wedding stories.”

“I’m Emma’s maid of honor, and the most important thing I want to say today is how much her friendship means to me.”

Practical writing guide

How to write a maid of honor speech

Start with the relationship you actually have

Best friend, sister, cousin or newer friend all lead to different speeches. Do not force childhood intimacy if that is not your story.

Choose one story the room can follow

One clear anecdote usually lands better than five inside jokes. Give enough context for people who do not know your history.

Be funny without exposing the bride

Skip private relationship details, drunken stories and anything that would make the bride wish you had not been given a microphone.

Include the partner without pretending closeness

If you know the partner well, say something real. If you do not, a warm welcome and congratulations are completely enough.

Do not turn it into a wedding-planning recap

Dress shopping, hen or bachelorette plans and last-minute fixes only belong if they genuinely add something to the speech.

Practise aloud, not only on screen

Use contractions, shorten long sentences and pause after a laugh. Cue cards or notes are completely fine.

Keep the room with you

How long should a maid of honor speech be?

Around 2–4 minutes works well at many weddings. A shorter speech with one real story usually works better than stretching the material just because you feel you should speak for longer.

≈ 1 minute

Short & focused

About 125–150 words. Good for one clear message, a welcome and a toast.

≈ 2 minutes

A strong default

About 250–300 words. Enough for the relationship, one story, the couple and a toast.

≈ 3 minutes

More room for detail

About 375–425 words. Useful when you genuinely have a story or longer friendship context worth developing.

What not to say in a maid of honor speech

The bride chose you because she trusts you. Keep the speech worthy of that trust.

Ex-partners or comparisons with past relationships
Private sexual stories or relationship secrets
Drunken stories that embarrass the bride
Family conflict or genuinely sensitive history
Long inside jokes only two people understand
Complaints about wedding planning or bridesmaid duties
Jokes about appearance, fertility, money or weight
Anything the partner is hearing for the first time

Common questions

Maid of honor speech FAQ

How do I start a maid of honor speech?

Introduce yourself and explain your connection to the bride in one or two sentences. A light opening can relax the room, but you do not need a joke. Then move quickly into something genuine about the bride or your relationship.

What should a maid of honor say in her speech?

A strong maid of honor speech usually introduces the speaker, says something real about the bride, includes one relevant story if useful, acknowledges the partner and couple, and ends with a clear toast.

How long should a maid of honor speech be?

Around 2 to 4 minutes works well at many weddings. Shorter is often better when several people are speaking. The generator on this page offers roughly 1-minute, 2-minute and 3-minute versions.

Does a maid of honor speech have to be funny?

No. Warm and natural is often better than forcing jokes. If you use humour, keep it kind and understandable to the whole room rather than turning the speech into a roast or a collection of inside jokes.

What if the maid of honor is the bride's sister?

Use the same basic structure, but let the family relationship guide the personal section. One real sibling memory can work well, but you do not need to tell the bride's whole childhood story.

What if I do not know the partner very well?

Do not invent closeness. You can be honest, welcome the partner warmly, congratulate the couple and keep the focus inclusive without pretending you share a long history.

Is a maid of honour speech different from a maid of honor speech?

No. 'Maid of honor' is the common US spelling and 'maid of honour' is the UK spelling. The role and speech structure are the same, so this guide and generator work for both.

Can a matron of honor use the same speech structure?

Yes. A matron of honor speech follows the same basic structure: introduce yourself, say something genuine about the bride, add a story if useful, include the couple and finish with a toast.

What should I avoid in a maid of honor speech?

Avoid ex-partners, private sexual stories, humiliating details, family conflict, drunken stories, long inside jokes, wedding-planning complaints and anything the bride would not want shared with the whole room.
