The rules

How to play the wedding shoe game

  1. 1. Seat the couple back to back on two chairs in the middle of the room, facing the guests, so neither can see the other's answer.
  2. 2. Swap one shoe. Each partner takes off one shoe and hands it to the other. Now both are holding one of their own shoes and one of their partner's.
  3. 3. Read a "who" question. The host asks something like "Who takes longer to get ready?" Each partner raises the shoe of the person they think fits the answer.
  4. 4. Let the room react. Matching shoes get a cheer; different shoes get the biggest laughs. The host can ask for a quick explanation on the best ones.
  5. 5. Finish on a sweet question, like "Who loves the other more?", where the right answer is both shoes up.

Hosting tips

How to host a shoe game guests will remember

Start easy, end sweet

Open with love story questions everyone can follow, put the funny ones in the middle and finish with a sweet question so the game ends on applause.

Show the couple the list first

Let the bride and groom remove anything that could embarrass them or a guest. A two-minute check avoids the one awkward moment people remember.

Keep it short

Fifteen to twenty-five questions is plenty. Stop while the room is still laughing rather than when people start checking their phones.

Use a microphone

The host needs to be heard at the back of the room. Ask the DJ for a mic and a short drumroll or sound effect when the answers don't match.

Mix in a few guests

Add questions about the room, like "Who would call their mom first after the wedding?", to bring family and friends into the game.

Ask friends for questions

The best questions come from the people who know the couple. Collect a few ideas from the wedding party or family ahead of time, then keep the ones the couple approves.

Plan the next moment

Have the first dance, the cake or the speeches ready right after, so the energy from the game carries straight into the next part of the evening.

Shoe game questions to avoid

  • Questions about exes or past relationships
  • Anything about weight, money troubles or health
  • Questions about having kids if it's a sensitive topic for the couple
  • Inside jokes most guests won't understand
  • Questions that are too explicit with grandparents in the room

Bridal shower

Bridal shower shoe game questions

The shoe game works just as well at a bridal or couples shower. If both partners are there, play it exactly like at the reception, with the maid of honor as host.

If the bride is on her own, ask her partner to answer the questions in advance. During the shower, the bride raises a shoe for each question, and guests count how many of her answers match. These 20 questions are written for a shower crowd, and the everyday life and funny questions above work well too.

  1. Who planned the first date?
  2. Who needs a phone reminder for every birthday?
  3. Who is pickier about the wedding details?
  4. Who chose the wedding venue?
  5. Who spent longer looking at the guest list?
  6. Who will cry first walking down the aisle?
  7. Who is more excited about the bachelor or bachelorette party?
  8. Who reads the instructions when building furniture?
  9. Who is more likely to adopt a pet without asking?
  10. Who would win in a cooking competition?
  11. Who decorates the house for the holidays?
  12. Who leaves the kitchen messier?
  13. Who secretly watches the next episode without the other?
  14. Who calls their mom more often?
  15. Who is the better gift wrapper?
  16. Who plans the vacations?
  17. Who is more likely to get a tattoo on a whim?
  18. Who is the bigger shopaholic?
  19. Who would rather stay in on a Friday night?
  20. Who will be the stricter parent?

Wedding shoe game FAQ

What is the wedding shoe game?

The shoe game is a classic reception game. The bride and groom sit back to back, each holding one of their own shoes and one of their partner's. A host reads questions such as "Who is the better cook?" and each person raises the shoe of whoever they think fits the answer. Guests laugh when the answers match, and even more when they don't.

How many questions should the shoe game have?

Plan 15 to 25 questions. That keeps the game around 10 to 15 minutes, which is long enough for plenty of laughs without losing the room. Prepare a few extra questions in case some fall flat.

When should you play the shoe game at a wedding?

Right after dinner or just before the first dance works best, when everyone is seated and facing the couple. Avoid the cocktail hour, when guests are moving around and can't see the couple.

Who hosts the shoe game?

Usually the best man, the maid of honor, a close friend or the DJ. The host reads the questions, adds a little commentary and keeps the pace up. Give them the list on a card or a phone so they don't improvise risky questions.

Can you play the shoe game at a bridal shower?

Yes, the bridal shower shoe game is very popular. If the partner is there, play it exactly like at the wedding. If not, the bride answers on her own and guests guess what she will say, or the partner records answers in advance and the bride tries to match them.

What is the difference between the shoe game and the newlywed game?

In the shoe game, both partners answer at the same time by raising a shoe, so the questions start with "who". In the newlywed game, each partner predicts the other's answers to open questions, like a favorite food or a first-date detail. Many questions in this list work for both.

Can guests play too?

In the classic version only the couple plays. If you want every guest to join in, you can turn the same questions into a wedding quiz guests answer on their phones, with a leaderboard at the end.
